This primitive owl came from the Arizona estate of a Native American art collector. He is carved, cubist-style, from wood and painted in earthy pigments of ochre, sumac, and indigo. He was purchased by the collector sometime in the 1940s and his nose shows some wear. Turning him reveals another face, this one sleeping.
